The first residents moved into the Altamont at 1901 Wyoming Avenue, N.W. in late 1916 when the apartment building was one of the city’s best places to live. As one of the grand apartment houses of Kalorama Triangle, the Altamont was built in the then popular Mission Revival style by architect Arthur B. Heaton and developer Colonel George Truesdell, who named the building after his summer home near Deep Creek Lake, Maryland. The Altamont was converted to a co-op in 1949. Today, the Altamont remains a highly sought-after residence and is featured in James M Goode’s popular book “Best Addresses” published by the Smithsonian.

 

The Altamont’s design was influenced by the Italian Renaissance and when opened featured 27 apartments, two summer pavilions on the roof, café, barber shop, beauty parlor, billiard room and large laundry room. The modern Altamont features 49 apartments of various sizes and retains many of the original architectural features including 10-foot ceilings (except for the seventh floor units), a marble entrance porch, rooftop pavilions and laundry room. Many of the apartments come with a parking space in the lot just behind the building. The expansive roof deck offers residents a chance to relax and get away from the bustling streets below, and the views from the top of the seven-story building are some of the most stunning in the City.  The lobby and reception rooms are distinguished by a large fireplace ornamented by carved scrolls from the originally constructed building.  In 2014, the Altamont updated the common spaces on each floor with a natural stone in a herringbone pattern that relates to the historic terra cotta tiles in the main lobby.

 

The Altamont is conveniently located just above Dupont Circle and in just minutes residents can be at any number of restaurants, shops or popular nightlife venues, with the popular Adams Morgan neighborhood just blocks away. For those who want to venture outside the immediate area, the Altamont is just a short walk from either the Dupont Circle or Woodley Park Metro stations.
